FROM FIBER TO YARN

Scutching

The second phase for mechanically transforming the plant into fibers: to use the linen fibers which surround the central wood like skin, it is necessary to separate them. Scutching, a specialized mechanical process, includs shelling, stretching, grinding and treshing. The sunny, sensual fragrances of cut grass and warm bread float in the air.

Combing

Combing is the preparation for spinning, a homogenization of fibers into soft, lustrous ribbons like blond hair.

Spinning

The third phase of tranformation: from fiber to yarn. Untangle, regularize, stretch, thread fibers. The metric number (Mn) corresponds to the number of kilometers of yarn, made out of 1 kilogram of fiber. The higher the figure, the thinner the yarn: from Mn1,8 for furniture fabric to Mn90 for an extremely fine handkerchief. For fashion, the standard is Mn26.
